Part 2 – How to look towards a brighter future at home during a Pandemic by Extending your Home.
Few weeks ago, we gave an insight to the Kitchen Makeover. In addition to changing your Kitchen dynamics there’s also changing or expanding other rooms in your home which can bring happiness within yourself.
- Consider Extending
The home can mean different things to different people. To us it is the place where we can kick back and be ourselves. The place where our kids can come home after a long day and literally throw their belongings across the room and not having a care in the world about who is going to clean up the mess. (Trust me, it’s a hard life for them!) So, you can see where we are going with this – Different spaces allow us to feel different things and some spaces in the home allow us to achieve specific goals.
During the Pandemic we were all confined to our homes. We worked, we exercised, we watched, and we listened. (But most of all we went insane!) And probably during these times, most likely, we were looking for things to move or replace in the home. Whether it was the décor’, the furniture or adding new Blinds to our windows. (Even considered getting rid of the kids Home Schooling activities!)
When people are happy in their homes, it keeps the good energy flowing and it bounces off each of us.
Some key points to think about before and during an extension:
- Do we have enough space to extend?
Make sure you know exactly what it is you need and to be sure you have enough room to do it. Don’t forget that extending can mean you take up other space that you would have, say, in the backyard. The most important factor to keep in mind is integrating your extended design plan with the original house plan. You definitely don’t want your extended piece of home to be just an extended addition that doesn’t share any similarity or continuity with the earlier structure.
- Get detailed plans drawn up!
Architectural plans AKA blueprints is information that you would get off your Architect which include such items as existing conditions of the site, the boundaries and building height. As well as a Site Plan, you will need a Floor plan. This will assist in giving you the 2D Vision of your rooms and how you can go about your extension and what you could utilise in the meanwhile. - Council Approval (To be Delayed or not Delayed!)
Depending on your preparations for your home extension, the approval from the council may take longer than expected. These delay times could be due to the extension having issues with your neighbours or if your building is already considered as a heritage by the local authority. Have patience – things will fall into place! Different states vary with their approvals so be sure to check in with your local council.
- Your Budget
This really should have been at the top of the list…. But we do things differently here at JHS anyways! You may have a lot of ideas for your extension, but you need to know how much money you’ve got to play with before you start any extravagant designs. Set yourself a sensible budget and it’s always worth to account for any unexpected costs – just in case.
- Insurance
Better to be safe than sorry. It’s a good idea to get a better understanding of your home insurance and know what it covers and what it doesn’t. Also, investigate getting construction insurance for the duration of your build, so that if anything goes wrong before your extension is completed, you’ll be covered for any loss or damage that may have occurred during the transition stage. Keep in mind it will also protect you from being out of pocket with a half-finished extension.
